🕊️ Fear Not – Holiness Fits Your New Identity

📖 Ephesians 5:3 “But sexual immorality, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not even be mentioned among you, as becomes saints.”

Paul reminds believers of who they have become in Christ. “Saints” are not people who never fail, but people whom God has set apart for Himself. Because they belong to Him, their lives should reflect His character. That is why Paul mentions sexual immorality, uncleanness, and covetousness—things that draw the heart away from God and turn a person's focus toward self.

The Greek word for sexual immorality is πορνεία (porneia [porˈni.a], sexual immorality, unlawful sexual relationships). The word for uncleanness is ἀκαθαρσία (akatharsia [a.kaθarˈsi.a], moral impurity, corruption). Covetousness is πλεονεξία (pleonexia [pleo.nekˈsi.a], the desire to have more, greed). These things flow from a heart that seeks fulfillment apart from God.

📖 Colossians 3:5
“Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.”

Here, covetousness is even called idolatry. Whenever something takes the place in our hearts that belongs to God alone, it becomes an idol. Yet God knows that no possession, relationship, or earthly success can fill the emptiness that only His presence can satisfy. His warnings are not meant to keep us from something good, but to protect us from paths that ultimately leave us disappointed.

📖 1 Peter 1:15-16
“But just as he who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior; because it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’”

God does not call us to holiness so that we can earn His love. He calls us to holiness because we are His beloved children. Through fellowship with Christ, He gradually transforms our thoughts, desires, and decisions to reflect His will. The closer we walk with Him, the more we discover that true freedom is not found in following every desire, but in the joy of living with God and trusting His ways.

🙌 Therefore: Fear not — God has not called you to uncleanness but to a life near to Him, and He graciously gives you the strength each day to live in a way that reflects your identity as one of His saints.
