🕊️ Do Not Fear — James 4:7 - Part 4

Many Christians live as though they have to defeat the devil. They are engaged in a constant battle against him, as though victory depended on their own strength or on the length of their prayers. But James says something different.

The Greek word for “resist” is ἀνθίστημι (anthístēmi, an-THIS-tay-mee). It is made up of ἀντί (antí) — “against” — and ἵστημι (hístēmi) — “to stand.” Literally, it means: to oppose, withstand, or stand firm. It does not describe a soldier going on the attack, but one who refuses to leave his position or surrender any ground to the enemy.

Why is standing firm enough? Because Jesus has already fought the decisive battle.

When Jesus died on the cross, He cried out:

“It is finished!”

The Greek word τετέλεσται (tetélestai, te-TEL-es-tai) means: completely accomplished, fully paid, finally completed. Christ’s work of redemption is complete. Nothing needs to be added. The price for our sin has been paid, the power of death has been broken, and the victory has been won.

Paul describes this triumph with powerful words:

“Having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”

The devil is therefore not an unbeatable opponent, but an already defeated enemy. His greatest strategy is to make Christians believe that they must win a battle that Christ has already won. He tries to turn our eyes away from the finished work of Jesus and toward our own strength.

James therefore does not command us: “Defeat the devil,” but: “Resist the devil.” Stand firm on what Jesus has already done. Give no room to the enemy’s lies, and do not move away from God’s truth.

📖 Ephesians 6:13

“Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”

Perhaps you sometimes feel overwhelmed by spiritual warfare. But remember: You are not fighting for victory. Jesus has already won the victory. Your task is to remain standing in faith upon His finished work. There, every lie of the enemy loses its power.

🙌 Therefore: Do not fear — you are not fighting for victory, but from the finished victory of Jesus Christ.
