🕊️ Do Not Be Afraid — James 4:7 - Part 6

When James says, “Resist the devil,” the question immediately arises: How do we do that in practical terms? Paul gives us the answer in Ephesians 6.

There he repeatedly uses the Greek word ἵστημι (hístēmi, HEE-stay-mee) – to stand, stand firm, hold one’s ground. From this also comes ἀνθίστημι (anthístēmi) – to resist, stand against in James 4:7. Both words carry the same thought: do not give ground.

📖 Ephesians 6:11

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

What is striking is that Paul never says, “Chase the devil” or “Attack him.” Instead, he says again and again: Stand!

📖 Ephesians 6:13

“Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand.”

And finally:

📖 Ephesians 6:14

“Stand therefore…”

Why? Because Christ has already won. Our task is not to conquer new ground, but to remain standing on the ground that Jesus has already won for us.

But Paul mentions something else that is crucial: the armor of God. It is not our armor, but God’s. Truth, righteousness, the Good News of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit—all of this has been given to us by God. We do not fight with human strength, but with what He has already given us.

The enemy constantly tries to pull us away from this foundation—through fear, doubt, discouragement, or temptation. To resist therefore means holding firmly to God’s truth, even when our feelings tell us something different. It means raising the shield of faith when the enemy’s fiery darts are flying and using the sword of the Spirit—the Word of God—just as Jesus did in the wilderness.

Perhaps the battle is raging in your thoughts right now. Then remember: God has already given you everything you need to remain steadfast. Stay on the foundation of His Word. The enemy can only drive you from your position if you willingly leave it.

🙌 Therefore: Do not be afraid — stand firm on the ground that Christ has already won for you.
